Manet made this drawing in preparation for an etching. The central figure’s contours have been incised for transfer to the copper plate. The use of red chalk – unusual by the mid-nineteenth century – and the time-honoured subject of the female bather reveal Manet’s engagement with predecessors such as Rembrandt, whose works he admired. This preliminary drawing shows him experimenting with the position and pose of the figure behind the bather. Traces of his initial ideas are visible at uppManeter left.

This celebrated work is É»å´Ç³Ü²¹°ù»å Manet’s last major painting, completed a year before he died, and exhibited in 1882 at the Salon (the official annual exhibition of the French Academy of Fine Arts). This would have been a startling painting for Salon visitors in many ways, not least because it seems to follow the traditional format of portraiture but does not name its subject. Indeed, the barmaid appears as just another item in the enticing array on offer in the foreground: wine, champagne, peppermint liqueur and British Bass beer, with its iconic red triangle logo.

The background shows a fashionable crowd mingling on the balcony, entertained by musical and circus acts below. In the top left, a trapeze artist in green boots adds to the excitement. This animated scene is in fact a reflection in the large gold-framed mirror, which projects it into the viewer’s own space.

Opened a decade or so earlier, the ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ð had rapidly become one of most popular music halls and places of entertainment in Paris. Manet frequented it with friends and made sketches on site. However, the final work was painted entirely in his studio, where a barmaid named Suzon came to pose. She is the painting’s still centre. Her enigmatic expression is unsettling, especially as she appears to be interacting with a male customer who is shown in the mirror. Ignoring normal perspective, Manet has shifted their reflection to the right. The bottles on the left are similarly misaligned in the mirror. This play of reflections emphasises the disorientating atmosphere of the bustling ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ð. In A Bar at the ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ð, Manet created a complex, absorbing composition and one of the iconic paintings of modern life.

The ¹ú²ú̽»¨â€™s much-loved permanent collection includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and decorative arts ranging from the Renaissance through to the 20th century.

The Gallery is renowned for its remarkable group of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including the world-famous A Bar at the Folies Bergère by É»å´Ç³Ü²¹°ù»å Manet, Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear by Vincent van Gogh and the most significant collection of works by Cézanne in the UK. These masterpieces are presented in The ¹ú²ú̽»¨ Gallery’s spectacular LVMH Great Room, one of the largest spaces in Somerset House, alongside works by artists including Degas, Gauguin, Monet, Renoir, Seurat and more.

The Blavatnik Fine Rooms, spanning the Piano Nobile across the whole of the second floor, provide the stunning setting for displaying works from the Renaissance to the 18th century. Highlights include Adam and Eve by Lucas Cranach the Elder, The Family of Jan Bruegel the Elder and The Descent From The Cross by Peter Paul Rubens, The Trinity with Saints altarpiece by Sandro Botticelli, and Landscape with a flight into Egypt by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

The Ruddock Family Gallery is dedicated to The ¹ú²ú̽»¨â€™s important collection of Medieval and Early Renaissance paintings and decorative arts. Rooms devoted to 20th century art and the Bloomsbury Group also showcase lesser-known areas of the collection through rotating displays.

Are you aged 16-18 and passionate about art, architecture, art history and visual culture? Join the ¹ú²ú̽»¨’s Young People’s Programme and take part in our free workshops!

You will collaborate with artists, curators, art historians and other young people interested in the arts to explore world famous artworks in the ¹ú²ú̽»¨ Gallery Collection, uncover new research, experiment with new materials and discuss different approaches to understanding and making art – as well as learning more about the diverse career paths available with art history.

These workshops areÌýfree and open to students attending UK state schools and colleges. Some workshops are online, others are in-person, please check before booking.

The Reworking Manet exhibition showcases a selection of outstanding works made by students aged 14 to 18 from across the UK. They are creative responses to É»å´Ç³Ü²¹°ù»å Manet’s famous painting A Bar at the ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ð (1882) in the ¹ú²ú̽»¨ Gallery. These reworkings explore a wealth of themes drawn from the painting and seek to raise important issues in our everyday lives.

Live Brief

É»å´Ç³Ü²¹°ù»åÌýManet’sÌýA Bar at the ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ð (1882) is considered his best work because it pushes at the boundaries of art and portraiture in many different ways, inviting the viewer to consider some powerful questions about Paris social life at the time and we want you to do the same in 2023.

We are really interested to see and hear your ideas about how this work connects with our social lives and values now. Whether you are an artist, writer, performer, designer, musician or historian, The ¹ú²ú̽»¨ would like you to research, interrogate and create a personal response to the painting in any media. You may work collaboratively, or independently to create a response.

By exploring aspects of the painting, from its materials and techniques, historical context and hidden meanings, we want you to draw out contemporary parallels and respond creatively to what you discover.

Creating your response

A response is not a copy of the original artwork but a completely new interpretation. We are looking for a personal response that interrogates a theme drawn from A Bar at the ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ð and comments on contemporary issues you are passionate about. You might choose to focus on:

Biographical: Who was the artist? What was he trying to say?

Representation: Who are the figures within the painting? How are they represented, and why?

Society: What does the painting say about society then and now? What contemporary parallels can you draw?

Meaning: How did people engage with the painting at the time it was made? What do they say about it today?’

Tool Kit

We invited contemporary artist to collaborate with a group of young people tasked with creating an artwork for The ¹ú²ú̽»¨â€™s new Leon Kossoff Learning Centre. Jeremy chose Manet’s A Bar at the ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ð as their starting point.

We welcome responses in all shapes, sizes, and formats. This includes artwork, spoken word, essays, musical composition, performances, and documentary film/photography.

The key element is that your work must explore connected themes linked toÌýA Bar at the ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ð, such as gender and identity, fashion, leisure and entertainment, consumerism, and innovations in science and technology.

É»å´Ç³Ü²¹°ù»å Manet’sÌýA Bar at the ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ðÌý(1882) is considered his best work because it pushes at the boundaries of art and portraiture in many different ways, inviting the viewer to consider some powerful questions about Paris social life at the time.

This opening webinar will introduce attendees toÌýÉ»å´Ç³Ü²¹°ù»å Manet’s famous painting, A Bar at the ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ð, briefly highlighting aspects of the artwork and discussing the impact the painting had within Paris in 1882.

The webinar will also introduce attendees to the concept of a response – presenting new interpretations of an artwork.

Finally, the session will launchÌýReworking Manet, a live brief forÌýstate school students aged 14-18, which asks participants to research, interrogate and create a personal response to the painting in any media.

This exhibition showcases a selection of outstanding works made by students aged 14–18 from across the UK. They are creative responses to É»å´Ç³Ü²¹°ù»å Manet’s famous painting A Bar at the ¹ó´Ç±ô¾±±ð²õ-µþ±ð°ù²µÃ¨°ù±ð (1882) in The ¹ú²ú̽»¨ collection. Ìý

Reworking Manet, a live project brief was developed by The ¹ú²ú̽»¨â€™s Learning team in collaboration with a group of young people and Turner Prize-winning artist and ¹ú²ú̽»¨ alumnus, Jeremy Deller. It opened to UK wide submissions 2023.ÌýÌý

Manet’s painting was chosen as the starting point because of its continued relevance to contemporary society. These reworkings explore a wealth of themes drawn from the painting and seek to raise important issues in our everyday lives. Ìý

The ¹ú²ú̽»¨â€™s Schools and Young People’s programmes aim to increase the number of young people in the UK with access to art and art history. These free programmes inspire learning and, most importantly, invite over 8,000 young people from all backgrounds each year, to participate in and shape the field of art history. Ìý

Reworking Manet is the first exhibition of work by students taking part in these programmes to be displayed in The ¹ú²ú̽»¨ Gallery since it reopened in November 2021.  â¶Ä¯ÌýÌý
